Cisco Secure Client (AnyConnect) VPN Connection Guide
This knowledge base article provides step-by-step instructions on how to connect to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) using the Cisco Secure Client (formerly Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client).
Prerequisites
Before starting, ensure you have the following:
- Cisco Secure Client Installed: The application must be installed on your computer or mobile device. If you don't have it, you typically download it from your organization's VPN gateway website or app store.
- Internet Connection: You must be connected to the internet (e.g., Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or mobile data).
- VPN Server Address: You need the specific VPN server address (or URL) provided by your organization (City of Germantown).
- Credentials: Your network username, password, and the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) method (Duo Push)
Step 1: Launch the Cisco Secure Client
- Windows: Click the Start Menu, search for "Cisco Secure Client" (or "Cisco AnyConnect"), and click to open the application.
- macOS: Open the Applications folder, navigate to the Cisco folder, and double-click the Cisco Secure Client application. You may also find the icon in the menu bar.
- Mobile (iOS/Android): Tap the Cisco Secure Client app icon.
Step 2: Enter the VPN Server Address
When the Cisco Secure Client window appears, it may show a blank field or a previously used address.
In the text field, select the full VPN server address.
Click the Connect button.
Step 3: Authenticate with Active Directory and Duo 2FA
The City uses Active Directory (AD) for your primary password and Duo Security on a mobile device for your secondary factor (2FA).
After entering the VPN server address and clicking Connect (Step 2), you will be prompted for your credentials.
Automatic Push (Default Method)
This is the fastest and most common method. If your system is configured for automatic push, follow these steps:
- Username: Enter your full network or Active Directory username (e.g.,
jsmith). - Password: Enter your standard Active Directory (AD) Password.
- Click OK or Connect.
- Check your mobile device: Duo will automatically send a push notification to the Duo Mobile app on your primary registered device.
- Approve: Tap the notification on your phone and select Approve to complete the login.
Note: With the automatic push method, you will not see a separate Duo pop-up on your computer screen. The connection will simply complete after you approve the request on your phone.
